We have been feeding Gwendolyn some water in addition to her usual formula to help her get the extra fluids she needs. My daughter is so amazing. She is the absolute sweetest thing and hardly ever complains unless she really does not feel well. It has been hard, because she has been the one with the Colic and the digestion problems. We never like to see her in pain. She improved greatly with the formula we have been giving her. She has had more restful sleep and been sleeping through the night. That is until recently.
The twins have been sick before with fevers and we did our best to take care of them then. Now Gwendolyn has a cough. She has no fever, but she genuinely does not seem to be feeling well. She is on the mend. As I said, we are giving her extra fluids to help get rid of the cough, but I found other things to that are helpful to do and safe for a 6 month old.
It’s hard to know what you can and can’t do to make a sick baby feel better. They generally can’t take suppliments or medicine, but comfort for your six month old is not a lost cause. Do these things to help if your 6-12 month old has a cough.
- Encourage lots of rest. let them sleep, or put them in situations that are at least conducive to sleep. Avoid taking them out in public, unless a drive will help lull them and they won’t be needing to go anywhere. Sara and I went out together to run some errands and we took turns waiting in the car with the sleeping babies while getting things done.
- fluids of course are important. we do it for ourselves when we’re sick. When I get sick I drink at least a gallon of water per day. I have a sort of ritual around it that I stick to and always gets me back into action within a day or two, but I hadn’t considered that a baby might have similar needs for additional fluids. It turns out they do, so we just put an ounce of water in a bottle a couple of times a day to help out with a persistent cough.
- Steam also helps, but in our particular case the air in our home is very dry. So we set up a humidifier to create more moisture in the air and hopefully help. In addition to that, breathing in steam is also safe and effective way to help your baby get rid of a cough. A nice warm bath (not too hot) in a steamy bathroom can be very therapeutic.
