Finally, they named one of the installments in Disney’s POTC franchise for that famous line that started it all. The Pirates of the Caribbean films are intriguing to me. The Curse of the Black Pearl was an instant classic and the mythic nature of it has grown into this marvelous thing that borrows from Indiana Jones and the more recent National Treasure films to deliver one of a kind adventures full of a unique brand of Disney magic. I absolutely loved On Stranger Tides and now with the seemingly final Dead Men Tell No Tales it appears as though they have come full circle, not unlike the original attraction that started it all.
Dead Men Tell No Tales tries to bring back that original spark that made Pirates of the Caribbean a massive hit. It introduces Will Turner’s son on a quest to find Jack Sparrow to lead him to a mythical relic that will end his father’s curse. Javier Bardem who was absolutely terrifying in No Country for Old Men plays the tormented Captain Salazar whose vengeful spirit rages after Jack Sparrow. Amidst the changing hands of fortune throughout each duel, scuffle or calamity there is a truly stunning and beautiful picture and the film is able to transport the viewer to some incredible places that I think could only be found in a Pirates movie.
While it parallels the original and can be thought of as a bookend to the series, Dead Men Tell No Tales is 100% it’s own movie with a next generation couple of protagonists that may or may not live on in new visions for the Pirates of the Caribbean property. The screenplay was written by Jeff Nathanson who is credited with the story for Indiana Jones: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and the screenplay for Tower Heist among others.
