BABIES’ FIRST WORDS

November 29, 2017 Eric Leave a Comment

Both of our beautiful (and can I say smart?) children have become very vocal.  It used to be that only cries were audible and that quiet was good.  Things have changed dramatically.  They are cooing and babbling very frequently.  They will try to talk to us, or to the TV if they’re watching it.  They sound things out and Lawson especially is working hard to be the first one to speak real words to us.

There is some debate whether he has already spoken his first word.  There are some in the family who would have you believe that he has said “Hi.”  That’s kind of a hard one to prove.  Once I swear I heard him say “Daddy”  I had flippantly said bye Lawson as I was on my way out of the room to go upstairs.  I heard the response and it stopped me in my tracks.  I went back down and Sara had heard it, too.  He hasn’t done it since though, so I’m not confident about that.

Both babies practice sounding things out with their surprising little voices.  It makes me so happy.  Honest to goodness, Lawson is trying to say “I love you”  It’s clear that he is trying to say that to us and he has come really close a couple of times.  It’s hard telling people about it because it is too early for them to really be talking, and I expect a healthy amount of skepticism, but if you could see him pushing out the words and how frustrated he gets when he isn’t able to completely do it… It’s awe inspiring and heartbreaking at the same time.

Gwendolyn is also very vocal, but not as diligent about trying to get words out as Lawson.  We came close with her once, but Lawson did not appear to like it too much that we were coaching her to do something he’s been working so hard for.
